Panther Chameleon UVB and Lighting
Lighting drives panther chameleon health: UVB for vitamin D3 synthesis and bone development, basking heat for digestion and thermoregulation, and a consistent photoperiod for circadian behavior.
UVB: Linear T5 HO bulbs are the standard. Common choice: Arcadia 6%/12% or Reptisun T5 HO 5.0 over the screen top, fixture spanning a meaningful length of the enclosure. Replace T5 HO bulbs on the manufacturer's recommended schedule (commonly ~12 months). Output drops invisibly long before the bulb dies. Mount the bulb ABOVE the screen — never inside.
Basking Heat: A standard incandescent or halogen flood lamp creates the basking spot. Target basking surface temperature varies by life stage and is lower for babies than for adult males. Use a digital probe or infrared thermometer at the basking branch — don't guess.
Photoperiod: 12 hours on, 12 hours off, on timers. No light at night. Avoid colored 'night bulbs' — chameleons can perceive them and lose sleep.
For any health concern, consult a qualified reptile veterinarian. Husbandry guidance is not medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do UVB bulbs last?
Linear T5 HO UVB bulbs typically lose effective output within roughly 12 months even though they still emit visible light. Replace on schedule.
Do I need a separate basking bulb?
Yes — UVB and basking heat are separate jobs. A T5 UVB does not provide useful basking heat, and a basking bulb does not provide UVB.
Should I leave lights on at night?
No. Chameleons need a dark night cycle for sleep.
